As we step into April 2024, communities across the United States unify to observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time dedicated to intensifying our collective consciousness about the severe impact of sexual violence and mobilizing efforts toward its eradication. This month serves as a solemn reminder of the pervasiveness of sexual assault, defined as any unwanted sexual contact obtained through force, threat of force, intimidation, manipulation, and coercion. It’s a period for acknowledging the strength and courage of survivors and reinforcing the message that sexual violence is an intolerable breach of human rights.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month underscores the critical need to enlighten communities on effective prevention methods while honoring the diverse experiences of survivors across every demographic. The harrowing statistics from 2022 highlight the urgency of this mission: 133,294 reported rape cases in the United States, including attempts and assaults, with an even larger figure of 204,055 individuals falling victim to sex offenses. These numbers include a distressingly high number of children and underscore a chilling reality: the vast majority of sexual assaults are not reported to police, with 63% of these crimes remaining in the shadows. This silence around sexual violence only exacerbates the trauma and isolation felt by survivors.

An equally troubling aspect is the familiarity between victims and perpetrators, with about eight in ten assaults committed by someone the victim knows. This fact challenges our communities to look inward and address the cultural and social norms that enable such violence to persist unchallenged. It is within this context that Sexual Assault Awareness Month also champions the cause of education, aiming to shift societal attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate a culture of violence and silence.

Education on prevention is crucial, not just in the abstract but in practical, actionable terms. Self-defense awareness and preparedness can play a significant role in empowering individuals. Awareness about self-defense weapons, for instance, can provide an additional layer of safety for many. Understanding the legal and effective use of self-defense tools such as pepper spray, personal alarms, and tactical pens is essential, which can deter an attacker and provide crucial seconds to escape a dangerous situation. In uniting with the Health and Human Services, Divisions of Victim Services, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Boards, and advocates across the nation, we commit to a vision of a society where sexual violence is eradicated. We pledge to work tirelessly to educate our communities about sexual violence prevention, support survivors in their healing journey, and advocate for a cultural transformation that rejects violence and fosters respect and dignity for all.

This April, let us all take a stand against sexual assault by promoting awareness, encouraging dialogue, and taking action to prevent violence. Together, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for survivors and a society that no longer tolerates sexual violence.
