Violence and crime are unfortunate realities that have a detrimental impact on societies worldwide. Unfortunately, the United States is not the only country to experience increased crime rates and incidents of violence. In recent years, South Korea has seen a rise in such incidents, which has led to a growing demand for self-defense items. Increasing numbers of people in South Korea are beginning to realize the importance of personal safety. They are investing in products such as pepper spray, stun guns, and other self-defense items to better protect themselves.

This trend indicates how people worldwide are becoming more mindful of their safety and taking proactive steps to protect themselves against potential dangers. As a result, both individuals and governments must take action to ensure safety and stability across all communities.

The very recent spate of indiscriminate attacks in South Korea has again increased the demand for self-defense items. Online transactions for self-defense equipment shot almost 400 percent from July 21 to Aug. 3, from a month earlier, according to Interpark Commerce. Items on the e-commerce platform include expandable batons, pepper spray, and brass knuckles.

Given the recent attacks, the surge in demand for self-defense items is not surprising. In July, a man went on a stabbing rampage near Seoul’s Sillim Station, killing one person and injuring five others. A few days later, another man attacked people with a knife near Seohyeon Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, injuring two people.

The South Korean government has responded to the attacks by increasing security measures, but many still feel unsafe. As a result, they are turning to self-defense items for protection.

However, it is important to note that possessing certain self-defense items is prohibited in South Korea. For example, firearms, swords, explosives, gas sprayers, electronic stun guns, and crossbows are generally banned for ordinary citizens. Only manufacturers, dealers, or those permitted by law to carry them for their official duties, such as authorized security personnel, may possess them.

Expandable batons are not covered under the law, but specific ones distributed to police are prohibited for use by ordinary citizens. Pepper sprays and whistles can be carried without permission.

Police have cautioned buyers to know the laws on possessing self-defense items. They have also warned people not to use self-defense items in a way that could escalate a situation or cause unnecessary harm.

If you are considering purchasing a self-defense item, it is important to research and understand the laws in your area. You should also be trained in how to use the item safely and effectively.

Here are some tips for staying safe in South Korea:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
  • If you feel unsafe, walk with confidence and make eye contact with people.
  • Avoid walking alone at night, especially in secluded areas.
  • Carry a personal alarm or self-defense tool.
  • Take a self-defense class.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of staying safe in South Korea.
