woman walking in dark

A woman was physically assaulted while walking in Nashville on Saturday night, June 24, 2023. The incident occurred in the 400 block of 24th Avenue South.

The victim, who has not been identified, was walking home from work when she heard footsteps behind her. She turned around and came face to face with the suspect, allegedly a black man who was shirtless and wearing shorts and a black backpack.

The victim instinctively began walking faster and then broke into a run. Despite her efforts, the assailant caught up to her and tackled her to the ground. The victim fought back and kicked her attacker until he eventually fled the scene on foot.

The victim said that during the assault, the suspect also choked her and made a threatening remark.

The victim suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Detectives are actively working to identify the suspect, and have some surveillance photos to work with to hopefully aid in his apprehension.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of personal safety. When walking alone, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and to take precautions such as walking in well-lit areas and carrying a personal alarm or pepper spray.

Fortunately, the severity of this attack was lessened as the woman successfully fought back and got away. There is no telling if this attack was intended to be a simple robbery, a sexual assault (this was verbally threatened), kidnapping, or worse.

If you are ever the victim of an assault, it is important to report the incident to the police immediately. You should also seek medical attention and emotional support.

As always, be safe and be prepared.
