Romanian bear attacks

In a harrowing incident, a 19-year-old hiker named Maria Diana was attacked and killed by a rabid bear in Romania’s Bucegi mountains, near the city of Brasov. Authorities believe the bear threw her down a 400-foot cliff as she desperately sought help from emergency services.

A Desperate Plea for Help

Maria was hiking with her boyfriend when the attack occurred. According to reports, the bear grabbed her leg, hauling her off the path before flinging her down the cliff. Her terrified boyfriend witnessed the attack but was physically unharmed. Despite the horrific situation, Maria managed to call emergency services while being chased by the bear.

Dan Banu, head of the local mountain rescue service, recounted the distressing call: “She was terrified … you could hear it in her voice. She was screaming: ‘The bear is getting closer and closer!’ It was all happening live. The dispatcher was on the phone, and her partner was shouting that they were being attacked by the bear. It was terrible.”

The Immediate Aftermath

When rescuers arrived at the scene, they found the bear circling Maria’s body. The aggressive predator attempted to attack the rescuers but was subsequently shot dead. Maria’s boyfriend, whose identity remains undisclosed, expressed his sorrow and shock in an interview with Stirile Pro TV, stating, “It was unexpected. I tried to scare the bear, but the misfortune happened. I’d rather it had been me.”

The Growing Problem of Bear Attacks

This tragic incident is part of a troubling pattern in Romania, where bear attacks on people and livestock have been reported with increasing frequency. While most attacks result in injuries rather than fatalities, the Romanian government reported in March that 26 people had been killed by bears in the country over the past 20 years, while severely injured more than 270 others.

Controversial Measures and Mixed Reactions

In response to these challenges, authorities have taken controversial measures. In one instance, a wild boar hunt disturbed a bear, leading to an attack on a hunter who was filming the event. Fortunately, the hunter survived. Despite such incidents, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) argues that increasing the number of bear kills will not solve the underlying issues. Instead, the WWF advocates for non-lethal measures such as improved waste management, erecting electric fences, and educating the public to prevent feeding the bears.

Animal rights campaigners are particularly concerned about the new law, fearing it could pave the way for the return of trophy hunting, which would further endanger the brown bear population.

Safety Tips for Hiking in Bear Country

To reduce the risk of bear encounters and ensure safety while hiking in bear-populated areas, consider the following tips:

  1. Travel in Groups: Bears are less likely to approach larger groups. Hiking with others can significantly reduce the risk of an encounter.
  2. Make Noise: Make regular noise, such as talking or clapping, to alert bears of your presence and avoid surprising them.
  3. Carry Bear Spray: Always carry bear spray and know how to use it. It can be an effective deterrent in case of an encounter.
  4. Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in areas with dense vegetation or limited visibility.
  5. Store Food Properly: Use bear-proof containers and store food away from your sleeping area to avoid attracting bears to your campsite.
  6. Avoid Feeding Bears: Feeding bears or leaving food out can lead to dangerous situations for both humans and bears.
  7. Follow Local Guidelines: Adhere to local regulations and guidelines for bear safety in the area you are visiting.
  8. Educate Yourself: Learn about bear behavior and how to respond in case of an encounter. Knowing whether to stay still, back away slowly, or use bear spray can make all the difference.

By following these safety tips and promoting awareness, we can help prevent future tragedies and ensure a safer coexistence with these magnificent yet potentially dangerous animals.

As always, be safe and be prepared.
