Whether we are talking about self-defense training, buying pepper spray or a stun gun, or even playing golf or basketball, the worst thing you can do is to not practice and continue to hone your skills.
You need to practice enough to effectively use these moves in a stressful situation and also make sure you are comfortable enough to do whatever it takes to survive. The throat punch or groin kick you laughed about while hitting a training pad is no laughing matter on the street. If you have to stop mid-attack and try to remember what that instructor told you last year, you fail. If you never flipped the safety switch off before or simply forgot what pocket you stashed your pepper spray until you had a thug in your face, you fail.
We aren’t necessarily talking about hours of hardcore training every day. If all you have is 20 minutes, a couple of times a week, that is better than nothing. Trust me, if you are ever faced with a situation where you need to douse someone with pepper spray or kick someone in the groin, you will cherish the practice time you managed to put in. This might not be the same as training for an Olympic gold medal, but if you receive a gold medal in living when your life depended on it… perhaps that is even better.
