woman looking back self-defense

It’s natural to question the practicality of preparing for something that might never happen, whether self-defense-related or something else. Even the most dedicated of individuals may sometimes hear that nagging voice in the back of their minds that questions the value of their efforts. However, it’s important to remember that preparedness is not just about being ready for a single event; it’s a mindset that helps us navigate life’s challenges and unexpected emergencies.

The mere existence of a plan can offer tremendous peace of mind. Knowing that you’ve taken steps to protect yourself and your loved ones from harm can bolster your confidence and help you feel more secure and empowered, even in everyday situations. And in the possibly unlikely event that a disaster does occur, you’ll be better equipped to handle it and bounce back more quickly. You pay your automobile insurance every month of every year, over and over. What a waste of money. Until of course, that rare occasion that you get into an accident. All of a sudden it is all worth it.

So although it’s tempting to succumb to doubt and worry, it’s important to remember the value of preparedness and the many benefits it offers. Regardless of whether we ever need to put our plans into action and defend ourselves or a loved one.

Uno Reverse

It’s quite intriguing how things tend to occur in a reverse manner despite our utmost efforts. It’s almost like a universal principle that washing your car would lead to an immediate downpour. However, what’s even more surprising is that the reality we know and experience doesn’t seem to align with others’ perceptions.

For instance, when our car malfunctions, we can’t help but notice how everything seems to function smoothly when we take it for repairs. It’s as if the car itself is playing pranks on us, trying to befuddle and amuse us all at once. In such circumstances, all we could do is sit back and observe the irony unfold further, perhaps even chuckle at the whimsical nature of it all.

It is quite common that we all have experienced some type of perplexing circumstances during our lives. Given this, it should come as no surprise that our subconscious mind becomes vigilant whenever we start thinking about distant plans, or even the unknown events of tomorrow.

Our minds tend to process complex situations to prepare us for any surprises or obstacles that may come our way. As a result, we become more cautious in our decision-making processes and tend to take necessary precautions to avoid any potential problems that may arise. It is important to note that this heightened sense of awareness is simply a natural response to the complexities of life, and can serve as a helpful tool in ensuring our success and well-being moving forward.

To be prepared, or not to be...

As humans, our minds tend to reflect on a multitude of emotions and thoughts, and in this particular case, I believe that our minds are reflecting several different kinds of fears. The first fear is the fear of humiliation, that nagging voice at the back of our minds that tells us that we might end up looking foolish in front of our loved ones and friends. The mere thought of them laughing at us, due to our lack of success, or making a mistake can often be debilitating.

Nobody wants to be the center of someone else’s scorn or ridicule, it can cause feelings of discomfort, shame, and embarrassment. Nevertheless, it’s a fear that most of us experience at some point in our lives, and it can hinder us from trying and taking risks, but it’s necessary to understand that failure is a learning process and that we should do our best to overcome this fear.

Next, as we delve into the world of investments, we often find ourselves apprehensive about the possibility of squandering our hard-earned money. This fear can be attributed to the notion that investments, by their very nature, are risky and unpredictable. It’s natural to be wary of committing our resources to something that has the potential to yield unfavorable results.

It’s not just the financial aspect of investments that we need to take into consideration; there’s also the issue of time and energy expended while managing and monitoring our investments. It can be disheartening to put in all the effort only to be disappointed in the end. Many of us have experienced situations where we invested in anticipation, but the outcome was not what we anticipated, and ended up being let down. It is, therefore, important to engage in thorough research and analysis before making any investment decisions to minimize the chance of wasting our resources.

The fear of not being able to protect yourself or a loved one is one of the most fundamental human fears. It taps into our primal instincts of self-preservation and survival and can be triggered by a variety of situations or circumstances. This fear can be particularly acute in times of crisis or danger, such as during a natural disaster, a personal confrontation, or a global pandemic. It can also be intensified by feelings of vulnerability, such as when we are physically or emotionally weakened or are lacking in resources or support.

While this fear can be distressing or overwhelming, it can also be a powerful motivator for taking action and preparing oneself for potential risks. By learning new skills, building relationships, and seeking out resources and information, we can work to overcome the fear of not being able to protect ourselves or our loved ones.

As we navigate the uncertain waters of the future, it becomes increasingly clear that our understanding of what lies ahead is far from complete. While we may have data and analysis on which to base our decisions, the reality is that we’re often operating in a fog of uncertainty. But despite these challenges, we must remain vigilant, and do everything in our power to prepare for whatever the future may hold.

Whether that means becoming more self-sufficient, investing in security measures, or simply being more aware of potential threats, there are a variety of steps we can take to ensure that we’re better protected in the face of uncertainty. While there are never any guarantees, by being proactive and preparing for the worst, we increase our chances of enjoying a brighter, more secure future.

Be afraid...

If you’re struggling with your subconscious fears, there are a variety of effective ways to combat them. For example, one of the simplest solutions involves refraining from discussing your preparedness plans with others. Whether you’re carrying a defensive firearm or stocking up on food and water in the event of an emergency, it’s best to keep this information private. If others don’t know what you’ve prepared for, they can’t make fun of it or criticize you for it.

By keeping your plans under wraps, you can prevent criminals from getting a peek into what you’ve got and where you keep it. And even casual acquaintances don’t need to know about your preparedness strategies. If someone says something like “If the worst happens, I’m coming to your house!”, that might signal that you’ve shared too much information. Overall, it’s best to keep your preparations on the down low and only share information with trusted friends and family members.

When faced with a situation that might cause you to feel embarrassed, there are a couple of approaches you could take. Firstly, you can opt to allow yourself a bit of self-congratulatory smugness. Now, by this, I most certainly do not suggest that you should become arrogant in any way, but rather that when your mind begins to engage in the humiliation gambit, which causes you to doubt yourself and your abilities, you should allow yourself to feel a bit above those imaginary people who might put you down. Doing this can allow you the luxury of realizing that, survival-wise, you are in a far better position than they are. You can come out of any event, whether natural or criminal, far less scathed than others, and that is indeed something to feel just a little proud of.

The fear of waste and misplaced spending is a valid concern that many people face, especially when it comes to survival preparations. If left unchecked, it can cause anxiety and indecisiveness, preventing you from taking any action at all. However, if you can learn to see this fear in a positive light, it can help you stay focused on practical and reasonable preparations.

By understanding the importance of balancing your preparations, you can avoid over-preparing in one area while neglecting others. This is where the fear of wasting resources can be helpful, as it prompts you to consider the most practical and useful ways to prepare for unforeseen events.

It is important to remember that survival preparations should not be isolated from your everyday life. Instead, you should focus on stockpiling the foods you normally eat and regularly rotate them to prevent spoilage. This way, you won’t have to deal with the unpleasantness of gross, inedible MREs, and you can continue to enjoy a familiar and balanced diet even in times of emergency.

One important thing to keep in mind when it comes to self-defensive preparations is to never let fear of crime control your life. Understandably, people may feel a sense of unease or worry about their safety, but it’s important to not let those fears dictate your actions. For example, carrying a defensive firearm, pepper spray, a stun gun, or any other self-defense weapon for protection is a reasonable and understandable measure that many people take.

However, it’s important to draw the line somewhere. It’s not necessary to let your fear of crime lead you to quit your job just to find one with a dress code that will allow you to carry multiple weapons and a small arsenal of supplies. In fact, a little bit of caution and moderation can go a long way in helping you feel prepared without going overboard. So, while it’s important to take your safety seriously, it’s equally important to not let your fears control your life.

But what if nothing ever happens?

My first thought when confronted with this question is to simply reply “Good!”

But, sometimes, even the most prepared people feel like they’re not prepared enough for what’s about to happen. It’s natural to worry about the future and what it holds. But what if you’ve done everything in your power to prepare for the worst and nothing happens? It’s a valid concern, but rest assured that doing things rationally and reasonably is not in vain. In fact, it can bring about numerous benefits to your life.

Being prepared for the likely events that may happen in your life can be a great stress reliever. Not only will it give you peace of mind, but it will also help you cope better with life’s normal ups and downs. Knowing that you’re capable of handling the big stuff makes the little things much easier to manage.

If nothing happens, you’re still better off. You’ve gained a certain level of resilience and strength that will enable you to approach life with greater confidence and vigor. Furthermore, you can save a considerable amount of money by being prepared in advance, and that’s something to be proud of.

I believe everyone should carry self-defense weapons with them at all times, while also hoping you never have to actually use them. But as the old adage goes, I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Especially with how inexpensive they can be compared to the amount of safety and security they can provide.

As always, be safe and be prepared.
